The National Hockey League is the biggest and best premier professional ice hockey league in the world and has millions of fans tuning in on a regular basis to watch the exciting ice hockey action. Formed in 1917, the NHL consists of thirty teams, seven of which are based in Canada, while twenty three are from the United States. The league was actually put together in Montreal, Quebec and features players from in excess of twenty different countries around the globe. While Canadian players dominated during the early years of the National Hockey League, things have changed quite dramatically in recent times, with a huge increase in the number of competitors from both America and Europe. Here we take a look at the current top teams in the NHL and see who is likely to challenge for major honours in the near future.

Chicago Blackhawks

The Chicago Blackhawks are certainly one of the very best teams the NHL has too offer at the current time, as their final four spot in this season’s Stanley Cup illustrates. Under the guidance of Stan Bowman, the Blackhawks have two Stanley Cup victories to their name in the space of the last six years, and while the current outsiders in the Betfair market at odds of 11/2, Chicago are not without a chance of winning the most prestigious trophy in ice hockey once again this year. When you consider that significant players such as Antti Niemi, Dustin Byfuglien and Andrew Ladd left the team following their Stanley Cup success in 2010, Bwman has done a great rebuilding job to make the Chicago Blackhawks competitive once more.

Anaheim Ducks

One of the more recent franchises in the NHL, the Anaheim Ducks were formed by the Walt Disney Company in 1993 and their name was based in the Disney film The Mighty Ducks. The team was sold to the Samueli family in 2005 and the Ducks have since gone on to be quite successful. Stanley Cup winners in the 2006–07 season, Anaheim have also won Pacific Division titles and two Conference championships. The acquisition of star center Ryan Kesler in 2014 has really taken the Anaheim Ducks onto another level, and alongside Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry, Kesler makes up one of the most formidable sides in the NHL.

New York Rangers

The odds compilers at Betfair make the New York Rangers their 9/5 second favourites for Stanley Cup glory as things stand, and were actually the first United States NHL side to win the trophy. Based in Manhattan, the New York Rangers are a member of the Metropolitan Division, and play their home matches at the famous Madison Square Garden. The Rangers have won the Stanley Cup on four separate occasion, their most recent success coming in the 1993-94 season, and this current crop of players are arguably the best to wear the New York jersey in quite some time. It’s going to be interesting to see exactly how far the Rangers can go under the guidance of Glen Sather.
